The ‘56 Chevy is one of my dad’s favorite cars. He thinks the ‘55 is too boring and the ‘57 is overdone. The ‘56 is his baby bear Chevy.

X3MOMMY is ok, but I prefer the one I saw locally “CHEP SLK”

My old boss used to say the same thing. He had one as his first car at 16, learned to rebuild engines on it. We saw a '57 on the road one day, and he went off on how overwrought it looked compared to the '56.

My dad has some great stories about a ‘56 Chevy. It was his first car, he bought it for a couple hundred bucks in the late 60's. The paint sucked, the interior was mostly shot, but it had a 265 Power Pack and a 3 speed on the floor.

He fixed the paint issue with a whole bunch of rattle cans of grey primer in the back yard. He broke the 3 speed trying to power shift, bought a Super T10, broke a few of those (they were like $20 from the junkyard) and then finally saved up enough to buy a Muncie 4 speed. First power shift with the Muncie and he destroyed the ring & pinion. Several rears later he saved up enough for a 12 bolt. He said after that his issue was that everytime he’d powershift, vacuum tubes would fall out of the back of the radio.

That Muncie 4 speed was a real mans transmission.

Agreed. My dad had a few other Muncie equipped cars, including a 69 Z/28 with the Trans-Am race package (2x4 carbs, high compression angle plug heads, factory headers, etc.).

According to the man, the way to drive it was: from a stop, you hold the tach at 6 grand and when you want to go, just side step the clutch. Eventually the bias ply tires would hook up and you’d start to go forward. At 9,000 rpms, pull the stick back as hard as possible without lifting. Third and fourth were found similarly - just jam it into gear without so much as moving your right foot. Just hold onto the wheel because it had a propensity to jump half a lane sideways per shift if you weren’t careful.

They really should fix that Crossfire properly if they care about it. (The spoiler is not supposed to be deployed.)

Oh man you just brought memories back to me. Had one in my 69 C hevelle. Bought it from a old circle track guy. You had to hate that car to drive it fast and yes it felt like it jumped in the air when you shifted it. It wasn’t pretty but it was fun. It actually ran a 12.77 in 92.

Btw great post. Well said!

That sounds like an awesome car!

My uncle has a 68 Chevelle and that thing is a redneck deathtrap, and I love it. He welded the rear carrier up instead of buying a posi so it hops, chirps and squeals around turns. I t’s got drum brakes all the way around, and a bench seat with lap belts. But it’s also got a stout 406 backed up by a Turbo 400 with a manual valve body, and it’ll kiss 11's on slicks. It’s possibly the most terrifying thing I’ve ever had the privelege to drive.

Lol. Awesome , redneck death trap is a great way to describe it. I had to sell it in 94. It started jumping to the right on launchers. Found out it had frame rot. My license was getting close to being suspended anyway. It's not good when the local cops knows your name and car.

Wow! T hat’s pretty wild! I hope it went to a good home with someone that could fix the frame.

A buddy of mine says he saw the body shell in bone yard up in Flint around 2002.
